Eighteen American soldiers were killed today
Eighteen American soldiers were killed today after the U.S. Secretary of Defense refused a request for existing armored vehicles to use against members of a Third World insurgency tied to Osama Bin Laden.
Does this sound familiar? It should it is history form Slick Willies Sec Def. not the current Sec Def. This was 1993.
In September General Powell asked Aspin to approve the request of the U.S. commander in Somalia for tanks and armored vehicles for his forces. Aspin turned down the request. Shortly thereafter Aideed’s forces in Mogadishu killed 18 U.S. soldiers and wounded more than 75 in attacks that also resulted in the shooting down of three U.S. helicopters and the capture of one pilot. In the face of severe congressional criticism, Aspin admitted that in view of what had happened he had made a mistake, but stated that the request for armored equipment had been made within the context of delivering humanitarian aid to Somalia rather than protecting troops.
We need to send as much armor as possible to Iraq and any where else it is needed, if it is requested. Armor is not the only answer because if you feel protected then you are at a greater risk. I guess if Secretary Rumsfeld would have just said that all requests for armor were only for humanitarian mission, then the left would have ignored it. What a bunch of puck the MSM is.
Lance has more history and information. check out his new blog from iraq.
