The Marine Corps is the Navy’s police force and as long as I am President that is what it will remain. They have a propaganda machine that is almost equal to Stalin’s.

I believe that General Cates, who was CMC at the time, demanded a public apology from Truman and got it. Truman went on to change his mind about the USMC when the Korean war broke out, after the Fire Brigade bailed the 8th Army out of deep shit at Puson. To be balaned, however, the officers and NCOs of the 1st Brigade were mostly veterans of War II while the 8th Army was mostly comprised of poorly trained conscripts with no WWII experience.
