Gun drive nets 244 weapons

The Saturday before the Hurricane the Greater New Orleans Buy Back Committee at this site New Orleans bought back 244 weapons

The group bought 244 guns, compared to 329 last year, said Rafael Goyeneche of the committee. Among the weapons collected were a dozen sawed-off shotguns, compared to one last year, and three automatic assault rifles, Goyeneche said.

Now, maybe it is a good thing some people were willing to give up the items that could protect themselves. Totally based on a promise that Police would provide protection.

Wait. The Police are quitting in droves, due to poor leadership.

“The police are quitting in droves, due to poor leadership.” And where is the Chief of Police, the Mayor, the City Council? Why, they are safe, of course. Meanwhile, the Mayor is reported to have said that he fears for his life because the CIA is planning to “take him out.”

Perhaps it is true, afterall. People deserve who they vote for . . . Sheesh.

Having lived in NOLA for several years, I am not at all surprised by the shooting, the looting, the raping, the robbing nor of the police quitting.

Don’t get me wrong, I love New Orleans, it is, or was, a great city(even after rebuilding, it will, in my opinion, never be the same) and I have a truckload of fond memories from when i lived there.

However, and most of the locals would have smilingly told you the same thing, it is, and always has been, the U.S. version of a 3rd World country, with a very high murder rate and a profoundly casual, why worry{?} public mindset. I have a few friends down there who are on the cops, and I’ve heard a lot of their stories and seen many police do things that would have gotten them in trouble in other cities. I once watched a cop take information on a property damage incident, perp in custody, writing it down on a matchbook cover. There was never a court date arranged, they simply let the guy go at some point and the owner of the property, a friend of mine(I had grabbed the perp and held him until the cops arrived), never received any kind of restitution.

When I lived in the French Quarter, I was near North Rampart and across that street were housing projects. Nearly every night I heard the rattle of small arms fire coming from over there at some point.

Corruption in city government was both blatant and rampant. I once met a federal judge from Philly who was down there to try a case because the defendant, like the Nawlins federal judges, was a member of the ‘old boy network’ and the US Govt really wanted to get a conviction.

However, the vast majority of New Orleanians are great people with fun senses of humor, and I have a lot of friends who live there. It is distressing that I am unable to contact any of them.

I think the police are quitting because they are no longer getting the bribes that were there before.
Some of the other police are moving in to take over for them.

Unbelievable. The situation down there is terrible and it’s the people who end up suffering. That mayor, along with the Govenor, should be impeached.
