Why we should have a standing Militia
For those that don’t know what a Militia is:
The National Guard Is Not The Militia - Armed Citizens Are!
Residents guard neighborhoods from looters
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When night falls, Charlie Hackett climbs the steps to his boarded-up window, takes down the plywood, grabs his 12-gauge shotgun and waits. He is waiting for looters and troublemakers, for anyone thinking his neighborhood has been abandoned like so many others across the city. Two doors down, John Carolan is doing the same on his screened-in porch, pistol by his side. They are not about to give up their homes to the lawlessness that has engulfed New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
“We kind of together decided we would defend what we have here and we would stay up and defend the neighborhood,” says Hackett, an Army veteran with a snow-white beard and a business installing custom kitchens.
“I don’t want to kill anybody,” he says, “but I’d sure like to scare ‘em.”
With generators giving them power, food to last for weeks and several guns each for protection, the men are two of a scattered community holed up across the residential streets of the city’s Garden District, a lush neighborhood with many antebellum mansions.
If the states had a standing militia a call could have went out for a gathering at the captain’s house and order and protection of property could have been put in place before the looting. These same people could have assisted in some organized evacuations. This is one example of why Americans should own guns. We need to learn how to count on ourselves instead of the government, any government local or federal.

In 1996 DM AFB had an A-10 “stolen” then flown to CO and the pilot “commited suicide” by crashing into an mountian. I was an active duty helicopter pilot, stationed at Ft Cartoon CO and our unit helped in the SAR operation. UH-60 pilots told me that they had flown over that site BEFORE and had seen nothing, but the USAF said that they had found the crash site. Armed with 2 500lbs bombs and a bunch of 30mm (He was in route to a gunnery range in Yuma AZ),it would have made a big dent in that hill. I think that the USAF CPT sold it to the Montana Militia! Now lets talk about some fire power to fend of some looters!
