The Magical Mystery Tour, Circa 2005, is coming to an end before it even began, sad to report. Jane Fonda has cancelled her anti-war bus tour. Why, you might ask? She has a new friend, Cindy Sheehan. Jane doesn’t want to distract adoring fans from the protesting prima dona Mother.

Jane Fonda told me yesterday she’s scrapped plans for an anti-war bus trip next March.

Fonda will also be making only two appearances this month on another tour with controversial British politician George Galloway, not eight appearances as was widely misreported in the press yesterday.

Why the change of plans? Certainly, Fonda is still very much against the war in Iraq and in favor of helping our troops there. But she said that she didn’t want to distract people from Cindy Sheehan’s bus trip, which is already under way and gathering support.

My sources tell me that the real reason behind this sudden change in plans is simple. Michael Moore, who has adopted Cindy as his spokesperson (while he is melting away at a dieters camp) has had difficulties with Jane.
She was his diet coach, but when he only managed to gain weight and not lose it, he blamed Jane.

Fonda will appear with Galloway — who is vehemently anti-George Bush — in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 18 and in Chicago, Ill., on Sept 19. She told me that “what the right wing has done to Sheehan is despicable.”

Her own decision not to stage a bus tour came because she wants Sheehan to succeed without messages being mixed.

“I would be a distraction,” she said, “and the vacuum has been filled. That said, I plan to speak out and write some op-ed pieces, but no bus tour.”

My sources also tell me that Jane is seeing this Galloway dude to upstage Moore, who will be coming home from his camp soon. Jane also has told friends that she now realizes how much damage she did to Jean Francois Kerrie by appearing with him back in the Vietnam days in pro-Communism demonstrations. She is applying this lesson to the current day Iraq war.

Sheehan, who’s now fielding offers from book publishers to write her story, is traveling with three buses filled with members of Gold Star families, Military Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War and other groups.

I was looking forward to seeing Jane’s fueled-by-veggie oil bus tour. Oh well. Guess I’ll have to wait for the next war to happen. Which, according to the reality based commune, oops I meant community, should be soon.

Jarrett Maupin II is not supposed to be running for Phoenix City Council. He’s supposed to wait his turn and not buck the system that has placed a minority candidate into the District 8 seat for more than 30 years. He’s supposed to wait until the incumbent, Michael Johnson, is done. Just like Johnson waited for Cody Williams and Williams waited for Calvin Goode.

But Maupin, who turned 18 just before he filed his candidacy papers, is not doing what he’s supposed to do.

It is great that a young American is interested in politics.

Last month, he was with the Rev. Al Sharpton, his political mentor and hairdo inspiration, at a meeting with Cindy Sheehan, the Iraq war protester. Texas police arrested Maupin’s father for speeding away from that rally, a charge Maupin disputes.

But he needs a better mentor!
