Today, everyone is talking about the killing of Tookie Williams! I don’t believe he should be executed! I don’t agree with the leftist reasons for why he should not be killed. He brutally killed innocent people and was convicted for the crime. The death penalty is not a racist government tool. I don’t get why the prominent self proclaimed black leaders play this like racist enforcement when the victims were also minorities.
For the record, I am PRO LIFE, PRO LIFE, and PRO LIFE. Another way of saying that is anti-abortion, anti-death penalty, and doing what can be done to keep someone alive. Even if it is an enemy terrorists, once they are immobilized that is. If they die while trying to kill Americans so be it. Death is a part of life. Death is no punishment.
That does not mean these criminals should go unpunished. These crimes should be punished harshly and swiftly. That would be a deterrent for further crimes. Strapping someone to a table and letting them fall into a sleep for the murder of innocents is just poor policy. It’s not a punishment (especially after 20+ years). I don’t think this is a punishment for the crime. God will punish him when the time comes. This is just killing someone that no longer deserves any rights of humanity.
I see two current reasons for the death penalty. 1) The first is to punish someone for a heinous crime. 2) The second is for retribution to the family, friends, and society.
I think neither is benefited by the death penalty.
1) For punishment these criminals should be punished. That could mean very uncomfortable painful process of making little rocks out of very large rocks. No TV, no visitation, no contact to anything of their old life and NO rights. That is punishment, death is escape.
2) How can a family member feel any closure when the criminal just falls asleep. Does he/she have any fear of dieing? Maybe but who cares. It is too comfortable, too sterile. I would feel better if the criminal was shackled and dragged off to an island with lots of rocks and no pillow. Under someone else’s complete control, complete loss of all human rights. I would think about how they were brutal when they did their crime and how they had a choice.
On top of this I don’t like the finality of the death penalty. These people are tried by humans, then judged by humans, and still punished by humans. We make mistakes! If after 20 years of hard labor someone might be pissed off if they were proven innocent but they would not be dead.
Should Tookie receive death for the brutal murder he was convicted of? No, I can think of a thousand ways to punish him that is worse than death. Lets see how the stoopid leftist deal with this on Tuesday. Maybe I will have to change my mind based on the threats the leftist has made. Darwin might have had a point.
