Merry Christmas

‘Twas the month before Christmas when all through our land,
Not a person was praying nor taking a stand.

Why the Diversity Police had taken away,
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.

The children were told by their schools not to sing,
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
We’ll hurt people’s feelings, the teachers would say
So December 25th is just a ” Holiday .”

Greedy shoppers were ready with cash, checks, and credit
Knocking folks to the floor, just to be first to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!

Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe’s the word Christmas - was not to be found.

At K-Mart and Staples and Penney’s and Sears
You won’t hear the word Christmas; it won’t touch your ears.
Inclusive and sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that they use to intimidate me.

Now Murtha, Now Durbin, Now Biden, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Schumer,
on Kerry, on Clinton !
At the top of the Congress, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.

And we spoke not a word, as they took away faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace.
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.

So as you celebrate “Winter Break” under your “Dream Tree”
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words rightly, choose well what you say
Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, not Happy Holiday!!

Merry Christmas to all, and all who are offended, you have a right to be.

When I was just out of high school (I will not say when that was, but it was a long time ago), I worked in a women’s clothing boutique. It was Christmas time and we had decorated the store. As customers came and left, I would say, “Merry Christmas!” or “Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!”. Not once did I hear any complaints, but my boss came up to me and told me if said those words again, I would be fired. I asked her why and she said, “Because not everyone celebrates Christmas and may find it offensive.”
I pondered this as I looked around our store all decorated with pretty Christmas lights, a tree and heard the Chistmas music playing. We had signs up that advertised our “Christmas savings” and reminded shoppers there were “only a few days left until Christmas”. What made it different if I said it vs. someone reading it? I became angry, but kept my mouth shut because I needed the job.
The next customer that came in was greeted by me with a cheerful “Happy Holidays!” She suddenly grew angry and asked for my boss. I had no idea what I had done. The two spoke in the back corner of the store. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but after the lady left, my boss yelled at me for not saying, “Merry Christmas!” I was fired at the end of that month.
