Newt Gingrich: The Right Ideas

Newt Gingrich can’t explain his high ratings…

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday he is still eyeing a run for president and can’t explain polls that show him ranked near the top-tier candidates for the Republican nomination although he has not formally announced.

“It’s sort of frightening sometimes,” Gingrich said. “Sometimes the guys who aren’t running are doing better than the guys who are running. Why would you want to start running if you’re doing better by not running than you would if you were running? I can’t explain it.”

I can… He has ideas and the right attitude so many Conservatives and Republicans are looking for. I don’t think he would have a chance at winning an election, but he has the right thinking so many other candidates are lacking.

Silencing Mil Bloggers

No more Mil Blogging from the front lines?

The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops’ online activities since the start of the Iraq war. And it could mean the end of military blogs, observers say.

Military officials have been wrestling for years with how to handle troops who publish blogs. Officers have weighed the need for wartime discretion against the opportunities for the public to personally connect with some of the most effective advocates for the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq — the troops themselves. The secret-keepers have generally won the argument, and the once-permissive atmosphere has slowly grown more tightly regulated. Soldier-bloggers have dropped offline as a result.

Not a good idea. We get so much GOOD and POSITIVE news from the soldiers and Marines in the box. To silence them-intentionally or not- is just bad PR for the entire war effort. I’m sure there have been some breaches in security here and there, but for the most part I think the bloggers have done an excellent job at sharing pertinent information on their sites. The Army should re-think this silliness.
