Civil Unions in NH
On this issue I lean towards the libertarian side of the get the government out of the house. Of the homosexual people I know they are mostly drama kings and queens. I would imagine the Civil Union Divorce rate will be higher than that of marriages. They are Americans and deserve to be treated as good as every other American out there. we will see how this falls our
CONCORD, N.H. - Gay couples in New Hampshire can start applying for many of the rights and responsibilities of marriage as early as January under a law Gov. John Lynch signed Thursday establishing civil unions.
“We in New Hampshire have had a long and proud tradition taking the lead in opposing discrimination,†Lynch said. “Today that tradition continues.â€
Couples who enter civil unions will have the same rights, responsibilities and obligations as married couples. Same-sex unions from other states also would be recognized if they were legal in the state where they were performed.
Question is, what will this do the the Free State Project?

I agree with yah on this. The problem with CU’s are mutilple: Taxes- CU are not recongized by the fed government so a couple united in a CU cannot claim each other like married people can. Also, any and all federal programs are denied to people in a CU again because the fed gov. doesn’t recognize the CU. Even state programs are denied WHEN the state gets funds from Uncle Sam. So, social security benefits, for example, would not to go to a CU “spouse”…
Immigration- if one is an immigrant (hopefully legal
they cannot sponsor the other- this is only an option for married people.
CU are only recognized in a few states so the couple can not be mobile.
As for the Free State Project: I don’t believe they are against this at all. These people are true liberatarians and this issue hasn’t been one of theirs at all.
If I had a choice in this I would go for marriage for same sex couples- just so they could enjoy the benefits.

The FSP doesn’t really have an “official” position on this one — but most that I’ve talked to would rather have the government completely OUT of the marriage business completely. If people want to be married, let them enter into any contract they like, without asking the government’s permission.
Me, I think these civil union people are just wrong and want special things, including approval and acceptance, from everyone. They’re just using government to force others to accept and approve of them and their actions.

The FSP doesn’t take a stand because it’s a non issue for them. They don’t care who marries who, or who has sex with who…man to man, woman to woman, man to animal and so on. The FSP doesn’t believe government has any place in marriage, contracts, unions, anything really. LOL…nor does religion, race, wealth…the FSP is full of Dems and Repubs who all believe in very limited government- the only collective thing they all agree upon is to provide for the defense of the US against all enemies foreign and domestic.
Everything else is off limits to government. I pretty much agree with all of it too.

Federal recognition of civil unions is a start. The vast majority of gays and lesbians that I know are just trying to get by and running into issues that a married couple wouldn’t (insurance, hospital visitation, taxes etc.) Reasonable requests that are stymied by the present system. If it isn’t hurting me then I don’t see infringing another’s rights as any of my business.
